Western Gap Scholarship

Students shouldn't have to study with a flashlight.

Western Gap Scholarship

When we imagine attending WWU do we visualize doing homework with a flashlight? Imagine having such a passion to complete your education that you attend while homeless.  The Western Gap Scholarship was recently awarded to a student in this situation and she no longer needs the flashlight, she has a home.  Bridging the gap between students in desperate situations is why the Western Gap Scholarship was created.  Please consider a gift to this important scholarship today.

This scholarship was established by June Fraser Thistle and her colleagues and friends because unfortunately they had seen too many students disappear from WWU in the middle of the night.  They are a silent group, these students-financial issues have a way of creating silence.  They are not typically the students who cause us any worry, they never rise to the surface, they never speak out in protest, they are too busy working several jobs and juggling classes and wishing they could participate in a club or two.

It took June fifteen years of watching students leave WWU to realize there is a way to retain a student who has a gap (often as small as $300) in their institutional balance after all aid has disbursed. It’s so simple it’s brilliant.  So she created the Western Gap Scholarship. This scholarship is administered by those who know best which students have these small gaps, our Financial Aid office!

Together we can be the reason a student does not pack up in the middle of the night.  Thank you!
