Compass 2 Campus: Help us help our students!

According to a 2014 Presidential report, "In 1990, the U.S. ranked first in the world in four-year degree attainment; today, we rank 12th. While half of people from high-income families have a bachelor's degree, just 1 in 10 people from low-income families do."

Please help us close that gap!

Building on the years of success that C2C has had in local Title 1 elementary schools, our C2C trained coaches help students develop more feelings of self-efficacy in their classroom studies. The collaboration with College Access Corps provides an additional 15 hours of post-secondary-specific coaching.

Why lap desks?

I was inspired by the writings of 6 of the migrant students who wrote essays competing for a single lap desk - not one per person.

  • Angelina 15 yrs. old wrote “In the Bathroom” with the anagram “I want this desk.” You can guess where she does her homework but did not win the desk.
  • Mayra 13 yrs. Old wrote “At Home When No One’s There” because she wanted a desk she could take anywhere because her home is too crowded for her to concentrate.
  • Jose 13 yrs. old wrote “On the Bed I Share with My Brother” about having to share this only flat quiet space with another person.
  • Carolina age 15 wrote “At Home But It’s Really Hard for Me” about her struggles to complete her homework now because it will offer her more options in the future.
  • Roberto age 13 wrote “My Crazy House” about his sister crying for her bottle and his other siblings watching Sponge Bob and how it was impossible to do his homework outside.
  • Only Exell 14 yrs. old won the desk with “En la Cocina/In the Kitchena bilingual essay about his efforts to keep his homework pages clean while working on the kitchen table while meals were being prepared and served.

Imagine if each of these students had a lap desk to call their own since 5th grade? It would open up so many possibilities for finding the clean, quiet space and they would know that somebody felt that their homework was important enough to give them a lap desk.

Why classroom wish lists?

Many of the classrooms we serve do not have essentials such as enough chairs for every student, up to date world maps, enough books on a topic so that 3-4 students don't have to try sharing a single book. Raising $200 per classroom would help fill many of these needs in an attempt to begin leveling the playing field for under-supported schools.

Why tablet computers?

We are trying to improve access to technology to increase interest in STEM and environmental studies and careers for 5th grade students from local Title I elementary schools.

  • We want to purchase 260 Wi-Fi only Tablet Computers to be donated to Centennial Elementary School (CES) in Mount Vernon WA and Blaine Elementary School (BES) in Blaine WA for use with our new 5th grade Huxley College Access program.
  • Both schools are Title I with CES having 84% and BES having 53% of students on free or reduced lunch programs.
  • These students do not have the same access to technology as students in wealthier schools. If they have less access to technology than their peers, then how do we expect them to develop and love and interest in technology and STEM related fields.

Allowing students access to technology begets a higher level of comfort and familiarity with technology generating a greater interest in related fields.
