Support the Black Lives Matter at School Conference

Woodring College of Education invites you to support the Black Lives Matter in Schools Conference and its continued programming and outreach.

This week of action is part of the National Black Lives Matter at Schools Week of Action and Year of Purpose campaign taking place in cities across the U.S. Black Lives Matter at School is a national coalition of educators, students, parents, unions, and community organizations advocating for racial justice in education. The movement is based on the Black Lives Matter guiding principles of restorative justice, empathy, diversity, globalism, transgender affirming, queer affirming, collective value, intergenerational, Black families, Black women, Black villages and being unapologetically Black.

“Across race and place, educators, parents and allies are coming together to ensure that every Black student and educator can live, grow and thrive with support, love and joy. The goal of Black Lives Matter at School is to spark an ongoing movement of critical reflection and honest conversation and impactful actions in school communities for people of all ages to engage with issues of racial justice.”

 -National Education Association (NEA)

2022 Sessions include:

  • We Gon’ Be Alright, But That Ain’t Alright featuring Dr. Bettina Love.
  • How Do We Create and Sustain Ecosystems to Ensure Black Lives Matter at School? Featuring Dr. Verónica N. Vélez (WWU), Dr. Brandyn-Dior McKinley (Smith College), Jason McGill (Northwest Youth Services), Joy G. Turner (Program Analyst, College & Career Readiness, Seattle Public Schools)
  • Energy Pawning: Protecting our Energy in Times of Black Hate and Violence featuring Rashad Norris, Relevant Engagement Consulting, LLC
  • Listen Up: An Anti-Racist Orientation featuring Dr. Danné E. Davis, Montclair State University
  • Why We Can't Wait: A Lifetime Commitment to our Black Males featuring: Dr. Amir Gilmore (Washington State University) and Mike Browne (University of Washington)

Alongside these sessions, we will be offering panels of student voices as well as university resources, and two discussion sessions for Dr. Bettina Love’s book, "We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and The Pursuit of Educational Freedom"

This collection of events will not immediately solve the trauma and injustice that Black students and communities have endured for over four hundred years; instead, it is a representation of a commitment to developing sustainable and intentional practices to better serve and understand the repair that needs to be done.

Your support of the Black Live Matter in Schools Conference makes it possible for Woodring College to bring to Western nationally recognized speakers like Dr. Love and to create as well as expand future programming and curricula centered around the educational system as it intersects with race.

Please help spread awareness and action on racial injustice in our schools by making your gift today!
