On September 6, 1899 eighty-eight students enrolled in the first day of classes and met outside Old Main building to begin what is now known as the Woodring College of Education. Enduring inadequate lighting, textbooks, or housing, these students remained dedicated and motivated to their education. Many of these students were the children of immigrants who needed interpreters to get by on that first day. However, they remained motivated to acquire knowledge and educate others.
Today this dedication to education endures. The students of Woodring today become nurses, educators, social workers and more. They work in service learning positions and through programs like Compass2Campus, TESOL, health and community studies programs, and leadership programs to inspire others to make a difference and fulfill their dreams. Serving communities all over Western Washington, these students are devoted to bringing opportunity to diverse communities. As the only public university in Washington State with a nationally accredited college of education and home to the State's only rehabilitation-counseling program, Woodring provides opportunities for quality education to all.
To continue the legacy of community devotion, service, and education, Woodring needs your help funding student scholarships and departments and programs including human services, elementary education, secondary education, and special education, and the RN to BSN program and Compass2Campus.
